Suicides up 4% in 2021 after 2 years of decline: CDC

Although 5 percent more adults received mental health treatment in the U.S. in 2021 compared to 2019, the overall suicide rate grew 4 percent from 2020 to 2021, according to new data from the CDC.

In 2021, there were a total of 47,646 suicides in the U.S. — 1,667 more than in 2020. The suicide rate grew from 13.5 per 100,000 people in 2020 to 14.0 per 100,000 in 2021, according to the data published in September by the CDC.

After two years of decline, the rates of suicide among men grew 4 percent and 2 percent among women, the data said.
