Percentage of American young adults receiving mental health treatment grew 5% in last year

The percentage of U.S. adults ages 18-44 who received mental health treatment in the last year was 23.2 percent, a 5 percent increase compared to 2019, a survey by the National Center for Health Statistics found. 

The percentage of adults aged 45-64 and 65 and older who received mental health treatment in 2021 was about the same as those in 2019.

The National Health Interview Survey collects demographic data from American families on healthcare-related topics. 

More details of the survey's findings: 

  • Last year, 21.6 percent of adults of all ages received mental health treatment, up from 19.2 percent in 2019.
  • The percentage of adults ages 18-44 in both metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas who received mental health services increased from 2019 to 2021.
  • From 2019 to 2021, the percentage of non-Hispanic white adults receiving treatment grew from 23.8 percent to 30.4 percent.
  • From 2019 to 2021, the percentage of non-Hispanic Asian adults ages 18-44 who received treatment grew from 6 percent to 10.8 percent.
