According to an Oct. 25 report from The Information, the tech company has discussed using the device’s cameras and sensors to analyze facial expressions, scanning for signs of depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.
The features would need to be approved by regulators before being marketed as medical tools, according to the report.
The potential move marks Apple’s latest foray into the mental health space. The company rolled out emotion and mood tracking on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch earlier this year, along with risk assessments for depression and anxiety.
“The assessments are provided in the Health app for informational purposes only and the results are not a medical diagnosis,” Apple noted in an Oct. 11 update. “If you have concerns about your mental health, consult a clinician.”
