New York is constructing a roughly 340,000-square-foot replacement hospital at New Hampton-based Mid-Hudson Forensic Psychiatric Center in an investment topping $300 million, News12 reported Aug. 19.

The hospital is being built on the existing Mid-Hudson campus and is expected to house hundreds of forensic psychiatric patients. The project is expected to be completed in 2028.

Mid-Hudson is one of three forensic psychiatric centers in the state serving individuals involved in the criminal justice system, including defendants deemed mentally unfit to stand trial.

The state proposed closing Mid-Hudson in 2013, a move that would have eliminated more than 550 jobs and required hundreds of patients to relocate, State Sen. James Skoufis said. The state reversed its decision in 2017.

It remains unclear what will happen to the existing Mid-Hudson facility after the replacement hospital opens.
