U.S. News & World Report’s 2026-2027 Best Hospitals for Psychiatry rankings, announced Aug. 4, recognize 17 hospitals, with most backed by a physician leader steering their program.
Psychiatry rankings are based on three years of surveys asking board-certified physician specialists which hospitals they’d trust with their sickest patients; a hospital needs a weighted average of at least 3% of respondent nominations to earn a spot on the list.
Here are the top psychiatry leaders at each hospital recognized (hospitals are listed in alphabetical order):
Brigham and Women’s Hospital (Boston): Maurizio Fava, MD, became chair of the unified Mass General Brigham psychiatry department, which includes Brigham and Women’s, effective November 2025.
Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center (Baltimore): Constantine Lyketsos, MD, MHS, has served as the chair of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Bayview since July 2006.
Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore): James Potash, MD, has served as director of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and psychiatrist-in-chief at Johns Hopkins since 2017.
Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston): Maurizio Fava, MD, has served as psychiatrist-in-chief since 2019 and became chair of Mass General Brigham’s unified psychiatry department in November 2025.
Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.): Jeffrey Staab, MD, serves as chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at Mayo Clinic Rochester.
McLean Hospital (Belmont, Mass.): Susan Szulewski, MD, is president of the hospital and holds the Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo Chair of Psychiatry since Nov. 1, 2025.
The Menninger Clinic (Houston): Armando Colombo has served as president and CEO since September 2019.
Mount Sinai Hospital (New York City): René Kahn, MD, PhD, has served as chair of the Department of Psychiatry since January 2017, and is system chair of psychiatry across the Mount Sinai Health System.
NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell (New York City): Joshua Gordon, MD, PhD, has served as psychiatrist-in-chief at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Francis Lee, MD, PhD, has served as psychiatrist-in-chief at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
NYC Health and Hospitals-Bellevue (New York City): Bipin Subedi, MD, serves as chief of the psychiatry service at Bellevue.
NYU Langone Hospitals (New York City): Charles Marmar, MD, has served as chair of the Department of Psychiatry at NYU Grossman School of Medicine since 2009.
Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA (Los Angeles): Erick Cheung, MD, has served as the chief medical and quality officer since July 2022.
Sheppard Pratt Hospital (Baltimore): Harsh Trivedi, MD, has served as president and CEO since 2016.
Stanford Health Care-Stanford Hospital (Palo Alto, Calif.): Laura Roberts, MD, has served as chief of psychiatry service at Stanford Hospital and Clinics since 2010.
UCSF Health-UCSF Medical Center (San Francisco): Matthew State, MD, PhD, has chaired UCSF’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences since 2013.
UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital (Pittsburgh): Deborah Brodine has served as president of the hospital since May 2019.
Yale New Haven Hospital (Conn.): John Krystal, MD, serves as physician-in-chief of psychiatry at Yale New Haven Hospital.
