Nashville, Tenn.-based Newport Healthcare permanently laid off approximately 68 employees from its Newport Academy facility in St. Cloud, Minn.

Newport implemented the layoffs on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, according to a WARN notice received by Minnesota’s State Rapid Response Team and reviewed by Becker’s. The notice did not specify a reason for the layoffs. Newport Academy operates teen mental health and substance use treatment centers, providing care for those experiencing behavioral health conditions across a dozen states and regions.

The affected employees are not represented by a union, and no bumping rights apply. Positions affected include advanced registered nurse practitioner, art therapist, licensed practical nurse, primary therapist, security guard and behavioral health specialist roles.

Newport Healthcare said in a statement shared with Becker’s:

“We are aligning our St. Cloud program staffing with the needs of the market based on expected census and demand. We are committed to supporting affected employees throughout this process. Our focus continues to be on providing safe, compassionate, high-quality care to the teens and families who rely on us.

“The behavioral healthcare landscape continues to change, and we must evolve with it by thoughtfully assessing where demand is strongest and how we can use our resources most effectively and sustainably.”

At the Becker's Fall Behavioral Health Summit, taking place November 4–5 in Chicago, behavioral health leaders and executives will explore strategies for expanding access to care, integrating services, addressing workforce challenges and leveraging innovation to improve outcomes across the behavioral health continuum.
