Nebraska added an estimated 1.2 million behavioral health appointments in 2024 compared to 2010 as the state expanded its licensed behavioral health workforce, according to a 2026 report from the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska.
The Behavioral Health Workforce Capacity Report was released by the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska, which was established in 2009 and is based at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
Here are four things to know:
- From 2010 to 2024, Nebraska saw a 49% increase in licensed behavioral health providers, including a 24% increase in rural counties.
- Workforce growth resulted in an estimated 322,560 additional appointments with licensed psychiatric medical providers.
- Growth of psychologists, licensed mental health practitioners, licensed independent mental health practitioners and licensed alcohol and drug counselors resulted in an estimated 912,000 additional appointments with licensed psychological assessment and therapy providers.
- Rural counties added 143 licensed behavioral health providers, resulting in an estimated 166,080 additional appointments.
