Humana has established a $3 million scholarship fund to support medical education focused on integrated care amid ongoing workforce shortages.
The Humana Health Workforce Scholarship Fund will provide full tuition scholarships annually to incoming students at Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine, according to a Jan. 26 news release from the insurer. The college was formed in 2024 through a partnership between Xavier University of Louisiana and New Orleans-based Ochsner Health.
The fund is intended to train physicians to address complex intersections of behavioral health, preventive health and chronic disease, Leonardo Seoane, MD, the college’s founding dean, said in the release.
Human said the initiative aims to expand access to care in underserved communities and develop a physician workforce skills in meeting both medical and social needs.
As behavioral health provider shortages persist nationwide, health systems are increasingly relying on primary care providers to deliver behavioral health services. Nearly 60% of patients who receive mental health treatment do so from their primary care provider, according to a 2021 study.
