King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services, one of the largest behavioral health providers in the U.S., reported strong third-quarter results across its behavioral health portfolio, according to a financial report published on Oct. 27.

Here are six takeaways from the report:

  1. UHS’ behavioral health division generated $1.86 billion in revenue, up 9% from $1.71 billion in the same period last year.
  1. Same-facility behavioral health patient days rose by 1.3% year over year, while admissions increased by 0.5%. This marks continued steady volume growth despite broader labor and access challenges, UHS said.
  1. Net revenue per adjusted patient day increased by 7.9%, and revenue per adjusted admission rose by 8.8% at behavioral health facilities — indicating strong pricing and case mix trends.
  1. Behavioral health operations posted a 19.3% operating margin for the quarter, higher than the 13.9% margin reported by acute care facilities.
  1. Behavioral health inpatient revenue totaled $3.06 billion for the quarter, an 8.6% increase year over year. Outpatient revenue rose by 5.7% during the same period.
  1. As of Q3, UHS operates 345 inpatient behavioral health facilities — 11 more than it did a year earlier — reflecting its continued investment in mental health infrastructure nationwide.
