The Defense Department’s “Annual Report on Suicide in the Military” reported 471 service member suicide deaths in 2024, down from 531 in 2023.
Here are four things to know:
- The total force suicide rate fell to 23.2 per 100,000 in 2024 from 26.0 in 2023.
- Enlisted males younger than 30 accounted for 56% of total active component service member suicides.
- Active component suicide rates increased from 2011 to 2024, while reserve and National Guard rates remained stable.
- The rate of military family member suicides rose to 6.0 per 100,000 in 2023 from 5.8 in 2022, with 146 deaths in both years.
