Sacramento, Calif.-based University of California Davis Health has expanded its behavioral health services with an accelerated treatment option for patients with treatment-resistant depression at its Advanced Psychiatric Therapeutics clinic in East Sacramento.

The treatment, known as Stanford Accelerated Intelligent Neuromodulation Therapy, or SAINT, delivers 10 sessions of transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, daily over five consecutive days, according to an Oct. 19 news release from the system.

SAINT uses functional MRI to map patients’ brain connectivity and identify personalized treatment targets. The approach differs from conventional TMS, which typically requires daily sessions over six weeks or longer.

In a small Stanford (Calif.) University study, 90% of participants experienced relief from some symptoms of severe depression after receiving SAINT. The finding reflects results from that study, not outcomes among UC Davis Health patients. The release did not provide patient outcome data from UC Davis Health’s program.

The treatment adds to the health system’s interventional psychiatry services, which include conventional TMS, esketamine and electroconvulsive therapy. UC Davis Health also opened an electroconvulsive therapy clinic in July.

At the Becker's Fall Behavioral Health Summit, taking place November 4–5 in Chicago, behavioral health leaders and executives will explore strategies for expanding access to care, integrating services, addressing workforce challenges and leveraging innovation to improve outcomes across the behavioral health continuum.
