UHS margin rises to 11.2% in Q1: 6 things to know

King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services saw an operating income of $502.9 million (11.2% operating margin) in the first quarter of 2026, up from $454.8 million (11.1% margin) in the first quarter of 2025, according to an April 27 financial report.

Six things to know:

1. UHS reported net revenue of $4.5 billion for the three months ended March 31, up 9.6% from $4.1 billion during the same period in 2025.

2. Total operating expenses were $4.0 billion in the first quarter of 2026, up from $3.6 billion during the same period last year. Salaries, wages and benefits were $2.1 billion, up from $2.0 billion in 2025. Supply expenses were $426.5 million, up from $402.9 million in the same quarter last year.

3. The for-profit health system reported a net income of $348.7 million in the first quarter of 2026, up from $316.7 million during the same period in 2025. 

4. 6. UHS amended its credit agreement in April 2026 to increase borrowing capacity by $900 million, in part to support its planned acquisition of Talkspace.

5. UHS held total assets of $15.7 billion as of March 31, 2026. Its long-term debt was $4.0 billion, with a debt-to-total capitalization ratio of 38.7%, down from 40.7% in the same period in 2025.

6. UHS operates 29 inpatient acute care hospitals, 346 inpatient behavioral health facilities, 168 outpatient facilities and ambulatory care access points, an insurance offering and a physician network in 40 states, Washington, D.C., the United Kingdom and Puerto Rico. The system employs approximately 101,500 people across its subsidiaries.
