Great Falls, Mont.-based Benefis Health System will cut and consolidate several services starting Dec. 19.

According to an email sent to Benefis staff, the decision was made to keep the system from moving into an operating loss and to prepare for a more financially difficult 2027. The email also said that the current financial environment is difficult for safety-net hospitals and health systems, and that 75% of its patients are covered by government programs.

“We are pursuing multiple efforts to optimize revenue and reduce costs. However, to ensure the continuing financial strength of our health system, we must also make some limited decisions about the services we provide,” the email said.

Benefis said it will consolidate all services provided at its Northwest Clinic onto its East Campus. Benefis will also discontinue services at its inpatient rehabilitation facility on its West Campus and will meet patient needs through other swing-bed and transitional care services.

Outpatient counseling, psychiatry and psychology services will also be discontinued at Benefis. The system will work instead with partner organizations such as the Center for Mental Health and Shodair Children’s Hospital to provide those services.

Benefis leadership is communicating with those affected by the changes and providing additional information on timing and next steps.

At the Becker's Fall Behavioral Health Summit, taking place November 4–5 in Chicago, behavioral health leaders and executives will explore strategies for expanding access to care, integrating services, addressing workforce challenges and leveraging innovation to improve outcomes across the behavioral health continuum.
