VR device that treats serious mental illness wins FDA breakthrough designation

The FDA designated digital therapeutics company OxfordVR's GameChange virtual reality mental health platform a breakthrough device.

The company said June 22 that GameChange is the world's first immersive therapeutic for serious mental illness. It provides automated VR cognitive behavioral therapy and is available only via prescription.

The virtual reality therapy includes immersive scenarios that guide patients through simulations of everyday situations in public. Patients in a recent clinical trial conducted in partnership with Oxford University and the U.K.'s National Health Service reported high satisfaction with the therapy.
