How 5 startups are using AI to improve mental healthcare

In the first three quarters of 2022, mental health startups raised $1.7 billion, many of which are aiming to use AI tools to transform mental health treatment.

From an FDA-approved video game to voice-analyzing technology, here is how five startups are developing AI tools to change the possibilities of mental health treatment.

  1. Kitsugi uses technology to analyze a patient's voice and measure the likelihood of depression on two scales, both of which use higher numbers to indicate higher severity, and once granted permission from the patient, the clinician can get immediate feedback based on the score provided.

  1. Hopscotch uses its virtual mental health provider network to connect children and adolescents to a compatible provider quickly and assists with insurance coverage coordination.

  1. Happy Health created a wearable ring designed to measure stress and mood.

  1. Akili created EndeavorRx, the first FDA-cleared prescription treatment video game. The digital therapeutic program is designed to help treat pediatric attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

  1. Artificial intelligence startup TQIntelligence created an app designed to use voice samples to help diagnose mental health issues in children. Therapists use the voice samples collected with the app, along with information including a child's diagnosis and background, to identify those in crisis, the report said. It is also used to monitor patients' treatment progress.
