HHS to fund behavioral health IT development

HHS will put $1 million toward projects accelerating the adoption of health IT in behavioral health.

In a notice published May 13, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology said it will fund projects designing, developing and piloting health IT solutions for behavioral health.

Earlier this year, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the ONC said the two agencies will invest more than $20 million over three years to advance information technology in behavioral health practices.

Psychiatric hospitals lag behind general acute care hospitals in adopting electronic health records, interoperability and patient engagement functions, according to a Feb. 5 news release.
