Headspace launches AI companion: 3 things to know

Headspace is introducing an AI chatbot companion to its app to support the online mental health platform's members.

The chatbot, named Ebb, is designed to help users through self-reflection and emotional processing, according to an Oct. 10 news release.

Here are three things to know:

  1. Ebb is not used to treat mental health conditions. The chatbot is a subclinical tool, according to the news release, and does not provide mental health advice or diagnoses.
  2. The chatbot can detect any responses related to suicidal or homicidal ideation, or other areas of risk. The bot will encourage members to call 988 or 911 if risks are detected.
  3. Headspace launched a direct-to-consumer business in April. The company previously only provided services by contracting with health plans and employers. Ebb is currently only available for direct customers.
