According to the New York Times, 57% of voters opposed the legalization of the drugs.

Advocates of legalizing the drugs in the state pointed to growing research that psychedelic drugs can treat mental health conditions, including depression and posttraumatic stress disorder.

The FDA rejected the use of MDMA as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder in August, requesting additional clinical trials of the drug. The agency has granted breakthrough therapy designation to psilocybin, the psychoactive component of some mushrooms, according to NPR affiliate WBUR.

Oregon and Colorado have decriminalized the use of psilocybin.
