Why behavioral health providers are burnt out

Work-life balance is the leading factor behind burnout in behavioral health providers, according to a report released Dec. 8 by Wiley.

The report, “The Psychiatry Practitioner,” surveyed 413 mental health providers, including psychologists, counselors, psychotherapists, psychiatrists and social workers.

Here are the factors behind behavioral health provider burnout:

  1. Trying to achieve a good work-life balance: 57% of behavioral health providers
  2. Having to turn away or wait-list clients: 45%
  3. Working too many hours: 44%
  4. Having clients with more severe symptoms than previously seen: 43%
  5. Clients demanding more time than able to give: 42%
  6. Feeling overwhelmed: 40%
