Virginia health system proposes 146-bed behavioral health and rehab hospital

Arlington, Va.-based VHC Health detailed its plans to build a 146-bed behavioral health and rehab hospital, Washington Business Journal reported Dec. 7.

The plan calls for 96 behavioral health beds and 50 beds for medical rehabilitation, the system said in a certificate of need letter submitted to the Virginia Department of Health.

Seventy-two of the behavioral health beds would be used for acute psychiatric care and 24 for acute substance abuse treatment, according to the report. Fifty-four of those beds would be new, and 42 would be moving from the system's main campus. Twenty of the rehabilitation beds would be moving from the existing hospital.

The project is expected to cost $135 million, according to the report. The plan requires VHC to buy back 5.8 acres it previously sold to Arlington County. The system is hoping to have all needed approvals by the end of 2024 and break ground at the end of that year or early 2025. Construction is expected to take 12 to 18 months.
