Huntington, W.Va.-based Valley Health System's psychology internship program has been accredited by the American Psychological Association.
The program was accredited on a contingent basis after being assessed through internal evaluation, a site visit by the APA and a followup report, according to an Aug. 12 news release shared with Becker's. The program's accreditation efforts have been spearheaded by Rebecca Dennings, PsyD, Valley Health's section chief for behavioral health and has been in development for nine years.
"APA accreditation tells your prospective students, peers, and the public that your program has met standards that verify your program's ability to prepare graduates to provide outstanding, evidence-based clinical service to ensure the wellbeing of the public," Dr. Dennings said in the release. "APA accreditation assures the public, licensing boards and potential employers that you have a sound educational and scientific foundation on which to build a successful career in psychology."
The program is on track for full accreditation by 2026.
