The company reported its fourth-quarter financial results Feb. 26. UHS, which operates acute care and behavioral health hospitals, brought in $332.4 million in net income in the fourth quarter, up from $216.4 million in the same period last year.

UHS operates 331 behavioral health facilities.

Here are five things to know about UHS’ behavioral health strategy:

  1. UHS is working to build out its continuum of behavioral care, especially outpatient services, Mr. Filton told investors on a Feb. 27 call. Historically, the company has located its outpatient services at its behavioral health hospitals, but it is starting to develop a presence in freestanding outpatient facilities, he said.

“We acknowledge that some people who are receiving outpatient care don’t necessarily feel comfortable receiving it on the campus of an inpatient hospital, or affiliated with an inpatient hospital,” he said. “We’re finding there is demand for outpatient care separate and apart from our hospitals. ”

  2. UHS is investing in technology in its behavioral hospitals, Mr. Filton said, including expanding EHR implementation and automated patient monitoring.
  3. UHS saw “meaningfully significant improvement” in patient experience scores in its behavioral division in 2025, Mr. Filton said.
  4. Revenues at UHS’ behavioral health facilities increased 11.1% in the fourth quarter of 2024 compared to the same time period last year.
  5. Adjusted admissions were up 2% and patient days were up 1.6%, while revenues per admission increased by 8.7% compared to the fourth quarter of 2023.
