The Tucson-based University of Arizona Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine and physician Steve Bierman, MD, have partnered to launch the Noetic Medicine Initiative.

Noetic medicine is an emerging field focused on how communication, mental state and clinician-patient interactions may influence health outcomes. The discipline draws from mind-body medicine, psychoneuroimmunology and clinical hypnosis research, according to the center’s website

The initiative will focus on research, clinician education and public outreach tied to how communication and mental state affect patient outcomes, according to a May 19 university news release.

As part of the launch, the organization introduced a 15.25-hour online training course for healthcare professionals. The program includes instruction on presurgical hypnosis, informed consent communication and methods for delivering difficult diagnoses.

At the Becker's Fall Behavioral Health Summit, taking place November 4–5 in Chicago, behavioral health leaders and executives will explore strategies for expanding access to care, integrating services, addressing workforce challenges and leveraging innovation to improve outcomes across the behavioral health continuum.
