Here are six figures that offer insight into the demographics of the psychiatric workforce.

The information below was compiled from data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ occupational employment statistics survey and Medscape’sPhysician Compensation Report 2023.”

26,500: The total number of actively practicing psychiatrists in the U.S. (Note: This number does not include self-employed physicians.)

5,630: The number of psychiatrists in California, the most of any state.

11: The number of states with fewer than 100 psychiatrists: Delaware, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota and West Virginia.

17 percent: The percentage of the psychiatry workforce that is female. 

46.6: The average number of hours psychiatrists work each week.

84 percent: The percentage of psychiatrists who would choose psychiatry as their specialty if given a chance to restart their careers.
