The 11 states with fewer than 100 psychiatrists

There are 26,500 employed psychiatrists nationwide, according to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational employment statistics survey. (Note: BLS data does not include self-employed providers.)

Despite this, the number of psychiatrists varies widely by state. California has the most employed psychiatrists of all 50 states and Washington, D.C., with 5,630. South Dakota has the fewest, with 30 employed psychiatrists statewide.
