States with the largest declines in state psychiatric beds

State psychiatric beds are declining in number, and those that are available are often occupied by patients committed to the hospital through the legal system, leaving even fewer state beds available for other patients, according to a recent report from the Treatment Advocacy Center.

The data in the report does not include inpatient pediatric psychiatric beds. 

Here are the states with the largest declines in the number of state psychiatric beds since 2016, according to data from the Treatment Advocacy Center:

  1. Wyoming: 177% decrease
  2. North Dakota: 153%
  3. South Dakota: 101%
  4. North Carolina: 90%
  5. New Mexico: 69%
  6. Texas: 62%
  7. Vermont: 60%
  8. Nebraska: 54%
  9. Kansas: 49%
  10. Alaska: 32%
  11. Mississippi: 31%
  12. Virginia: 27%
  13. Arizona: 26%
  14. South Carolina: 26%
  15. Kentucky: 24%
