State Legislature recommends closing Virginia behavioral health facility

A Virginia state Legislature study has recommended the closure of a behavioral health center in Staunton, the News Leader reported Dec. 12.

The study suggested the closure of the Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents, which is the smallest of the nine state-run mental health facilities across Virginia. It also recommended relocating the center's staff to Western State Hospital, also in Staunton.

The study determined that CCCA had the state's highest rate of patient-on-patient and patient-on-staff physical safety incidents, patient self-harm incidents, substantiated human rights complaints and use of physical restraint against patients, the report said.
