Sumter, S.C.-based Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital is set to open a $9.1 million, 16-bed Behavioral Health Emergency Care Unit Jan. 5, providing around-the-clock stabilization and support services.

The unit will serve patients experiencing behavioral health or substance use crises, with capacity for 11 adult and four pediatric patients, according to a Dec. 15 news release. It is designed to offer rapid stabilization and intensive treatment in a secure environment, allowing patients to quickly return home or move to an appropriate care setting.

Behavioral health providers will work alongside emergency medicine teams to stabilize patients and connect them to continuing services, including support from peer recovery coaches.

Tuomey Hospital averages around 300 behavioral health visits per month, with a patient population that is approximately 80% adults and 20% pediatric.
