If the city declared a crisis, it could receive more funding from the state and federal government, which it would use to hire more healthcare workers and open more beds; the city has lost nearly 3,000 behavioral health beds since 2017.

San Diego’s Economic Development and Intergovernmental Relations Committee recently voted unanimously to declare a crisis over the bed shortage. The full City Council is expected to vote on the matter by the end of the year, according to the report.

At the Becker's Fall Behavioral Health Summit, taking place October 20–22 in Chicago, behavioral health leaders and executives will explore strategies for expanding access to care, integrating services, addressing workforce challenges and leveraging innovation to improve outcomes across the behavioral health continuum.
