Quartz Health fined $500K for inadequate mental health coverage

The state of Illinois hit Quartz Health, an insurance company based in Sauk City, Wis., with a $500,000 fine for violating a federal law that requires plans to have mental health coverage comparable to medical or surgical care, ABC affiliate WICS reported Jan. 11.

An investigation by the Illinois Department of Insurance found the company violated the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act by creating barriers that limit access to substance use treatment medications, imposing therapy requirements and more, according to the report.
