Vancouver, Wash.-based PeaceHealth secured certificate-of-need approval from the Oregon Health Authority for its proposed 89-bed psychiatric hospital in Springfield, Ore.

The project, known as Timber Springs Behavioral Health Hospital, now hinges on an annexation request pending before the Springfield City Council, according to an Oct. 15 news release shared with Becker’s. Council members are expected to vote Nov. 2 on whether to annex nearly 18 acres on International Way, where PeaceHealth and Lane County plan to establish a behavioral health campus.

PeaceHealth said it must secure annexation approval by Dec. 1 to keep the project within budget and on track for an early 2029 opening. The request was first presented to the council May 18 and has been discussed at seven meetings and work sessions since.

The planned facility would replace PeaceHealth’s 35-bed behavioral health unit on its University District campus in Eugene, Ore. It would provide inpatient psychiatric care for adults and adolescents, with the goal of expanding treatment access and reducing emergency department demand at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield.

The proposed campus would also house Lane County’s crisis stabilization center.

At the Becker's Fall Behavioral Health Summit, taking place November 4–5 in Chicago, behavioral health leaders and executives will explore strategies for expanding access to care, integrating services, addressing workforce challenges and leveraging innovation to improve outcomes across the behavioral health continuum.
