Durham, N.C.-based El Futuro, a nonprofit serving Latino immigrants, has seen a sharp increase in mental health service demand this year, doubling their annual intake of patients, according to a Nov. 7 report from Spectrum News 1.
Luke Smith, MD, executive director of the nonprofit, said El Futuro typically sees about 6,000 clients every year, but that number will nearly double by 2025. He attributed the rise in demand to increased Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity, which he said has contributed to heightened anxiety and depression within the community.
In response, El Futuro has introduced walk-in services and implemented privacy measures, such as buzzer systems that allow clients to wait in their cars — to help individuals feel safer seeking care, according to the report.
The organization also focuses on reconnecting individuals with their cultural roots through community-building events where immigrants can gather and feel supported.
