New York City will spend $10.8 million to expand its free mental health helpline, NYC Well, Mayor Eric Adams said this week.

The new investment will enable NYC Well to “provide high-quality service to more New Yorkers 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Tina Chiu and Jason Hansman, co-directors of the Mayor’s Office of Community Mental Health, said in a July 18 news release from the city.

The funding was provided by the New York State Office of Mental Health to hire more staff, including  counselors and peer support specialists, to answer the helpline’s calls, texts and chats.

Calls to the national three-digit suicide lifeline from local area codes will automatically be transferred to the NYC Well line.
