According to a May 15 news release, the new AmeriCorps program, backed by the Schultz Family Foundation and Pinterest, will recruit and train young people to help teenagers access mental health resources.
Here are five things to know:
- Participants will be trained to serve in middle and high schools and community organizations, directing teenagers to mental health resources.
- The program will launch in Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota and Texas in 2024, and in seven more states in 2025.
- The program is open to adults ages 18-24.
- Participants will receive a stipend and credentials to advance their career, and receive education awards to pay for tuition or pay back student loans.
- As the program expands, organizers expect thousands of young adults to participate each year.
