Mental health worker demographics: An industry snapshot

Licensed clinical social workers, often referred to as therapists, make up 36 percent of the country's mental health workforce, according to data from the U.S. Government Accountability Office.

There are more than 612,000 behavioral health specialists in the U.S., according to data from 2020, the most recent available. Here is a breakdown of the number of providers by specialty.
