Mental health app Calm lays off 20% of staff

Meditation and wellness app company Calm.com laid off 20 percent of its staff, which a former employee claims is to cut costs, the Wall Street Journal reported Aug. 11.

Out of the company's 400 employees, approximately 90 were laid off.

A former employee said the company had been trying to reduce expenses in recent months to avoid layoffs but ultimately ended up laying off the employees, which includes over 12 members of the consumer marketing team.

A statement from Calm CEO David Koh didn't provide detail on the cuts but said the company's leaders "revisited the investment thesis behind every project" before cutting employees.
