Bozeman, Mont.-based Charlie Health, the largest behavioral health provider for youth in crisis, is expanding into California.

Charlie Health said April 19 that it will fill three major gaps in California’s mental healthcare system: access, availability and affordability. California ranks 48th in the nation for youth access to mental healthcare, according to a news release.

“Today, nearly half of young people in California struggle with mental health issues. But only 1 in 8 receive treatment,” Charlie Health CEO and co-founder Carter Barnhart said. “Rates of both suicide and self harm are on the rise, as are psych-related ER admissions. The current mental healthcare model is unsustainable and ineffective. Charlie Health is delivering life-saving care solutions in a state that is not only grappling with a youth mental health crisis but also with a serious mental health provider shortage.”
