Illinois psychologist convicted of Medicare fraud

Renato Duarte, a licensed psychologist in Illinois, was convicted of four counts of healthcare fraud in federal court for submitting fraudulent claims to Medicare for psychotherapy services he never provided.

Mr. Duarte submitted claims for therapy services provided to nursing home patients in the Chicago area while he was traveling outside of the country between July 2016 and June 2019. He never provided those services, however. Mr. Duarte also attempted to bill for services provided to patients who were deceased, according to an Oct. 21 news release from the Justice Department.

Mr. Duarte is scheduled to be sentenced on April 18 and faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison on each count.
