HCA Florida mental health hospital closes

HCA Florida Trinity West Hospital, a mental health hospital in New Port Richey, has closed.

In a Sept. 8 statement, Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare said the facility temporarily closed Aug. 30 in response to evacuations ordered during Hurricane Idalia. Six patients were transferred to other facilities.

Following the temporary closure, HCA decided to close the facility permanently, according to the statement. HCA will transfer mental health services from Trinity West to HCA Florida West Tampa and HCA Florida Largo West Hospitals, nearby facilities in the Tampa Bay area.

"This consolidation will allow the West Florida Division to pool resources and expand capabilities to more positively impact patient care and better serve the broader community," HCA said in its statement.

Demand for the hospital's services declined over the years, with an average daily census of 18 patients over the past year, according to HCA.
