Former psychiatric hospital leader dies at 93

Mehadin Arafeh, MD, an internationally known mental health psychiatrist and 14-year superintendent of Middletown-based Connecticut Valley Hospital, died Nov. 6 at 93.

Dr. Arafeh served as superintendent of Connecticut Valley Hospital for 14 years, according to his obituary. After leaving, he held a number of leadership positions at other centers, including director of quality assurance for the CT State Mental Health Department and medical director of the division of mental health and substance abuse services at Veterans Memorial Medical Center/Mid-State. He went on to work in clinical psychiatry with CT Behavioral Health Association and in private practice until his retirement in 2013.

He is survived by his wife, three children and three grandchildren.
