Mecklenburg County committed $2 million for construction and $750,000 in ongoing operational costs. The Steve Smith Family Foundation and Alliance Health each committed $800,000 for construction.
The facility will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and be run by behavioral health care provider Daymark Recovery Services, based in Winston-Salem, N.C. It was created to keep individuals experiencing an urgent mental health crisis out of hospitals and jails.
The center will offer services to patients regardless of ability to pay, Anthony Trotman, deputy county manager for Mecklenburg, told the news outlet.
