Female physician specialists make 30.9% less than male counterparts: report

Although 42 percent of psychiatrists are female, the average salary of female specialists in 2022 is $307,000, whereas men in the field make on average $402,000, according to data published Oct. 14 by Medscape.

The "Female Physician Compensation Report" for 2022 compiled data from 13,064 female practitioners who responded to Medscape between Oct. 5, 2021, and Jan. 19, 2022.

Five more key findings from the survey:

  • The average income among female physicians of all specialties was 30.9 percent less than their male counterparts.
  • Self-employed female specialists make on average 22 percent more than employed practitioners.
  • Fifty-two percent of female providers said they do not feel fairly compensated.
  • Seventy-four percent of female psychiatrists said they would pursue medicine again if given the opportunity to choose a different career path.
  • Eighty-six percent of female psychiatrists would choose to pursue psychiatry if given the opportunity to re-select a specialty.

Although the gender pay gap remains, progress has been made since 2021. The disparity decreased by 8.5 percent year over year, and the amount of female psychiatrists who would still  and the amount of female psychiatrists who would still pursue psychiatry grew by 3 percent year over year.
