Colorado system reopens youth psych unit

Grand Junction, Colo.-based Mind Springs Health's psychiatric hospital is reopening its youth ward after being closed for little over a month, The Daily Sentinel reported Aug. 14.

The system announced it would close the unit on July 11 due to lack of demand during the summer. It reported that there were fewer than two youth patients each day during the second half of summer break. During the closure, youth brought to the psychiatric hospital were evaluated in the emergency department, treated onsite or transferred to another facility.

The hospital said it had planned to reopen at the start of the school year when youth mental health tends to worsen, but has now opened the unit shortly before school begins.

Last year, the hospital treated around 300 adolescent and pediatric patients in its dedicated youth unit.
