Colorado psychiatrist indicted on prescription drugs charges

Suburban Denver psychiatrist Howard Weiss faces charges that he overprescribed opioids and other controlled substances at his cash-based practice, despite knowing his patients weren't using the drugs as prescribed, the Denver Post reported.

The federal indictment, unsealed in July, states that one of his patients was prescribed 9,000 Adderall pills, 480 pills of the muscle relaxant Soma, and 480 Xanax tablets in three months, the Denver Post reported July 22. At least one of his patients died of an overdose, the indictment alleges.

According to the indictment, Dr. Weiss, who practiced In Greenwood Village, Colo., prescribed addictive substances to patients with substance use disorders despite drug tests showing they were using the drugs more than prescribed, and his medical license was suspended in November 2019.

The alleged overprescribing occurred from 2003 to 2019. He faces 120 charges connected to his prescriptions and finances, according to the Denver Post.

Dr. Weiss has pleaded not guilty and was released in July on $100,000 bond.
