CMS taps 4 states for behavioral innovation model: 5 things to know

Here are five things to know: 

1. The Innovation in Behavioral Health model is designed to bridge gaps between behavioral and physical health, according to CMS. The agency announced the model in January.  
2. The model is designed to reach Medicaid and Medicare beneficiaries with moderate to severe mental health conditions or who are suffering from a substance use disorder. 
3. The agency named the four state Medicaid agencies that will participate in the program Dec. 18. Oklahoma will implement the model statewide, while Michigan, New York and South Carolina will implement the model in certain areas. 
4. Participations in the model will include community mental health centers, opioid treatment centers and private mental health practices. Participants will be responsible for coordinating with other providers to address patients’ mental and physical health, and needs such as housing, food and transportation. 
5. The eight-year model period begins Jan. 1.
