California will provide $3.3 billion in funding to create more than 5,000 residential beds and 21,800 outpatient treatment spots.
The funding is the first round of the Behavioral Health Continuum Infrastructure Program, according to a May 12 news release from California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office. Voters approved the funding in 2024.
A second, $800 million round of funding will be distributed later, according to the release.
The state is facing a shortfall of more than 7,000 behavioral health beds.
