AmeriCorps funding for the National Mental Health Corps will be cut entirely in August 2025, according to an Aug. 1 news release.
The National Mental Health Corps places AmeriCorps participants with suicide and crisis hotline centers, known by the 988 dial code, and develops behavioral workforce initiatives — with 92% of participants remaining in long-term careers, such as clinicians, social workers and school counselors, according to the news release.
The lack of funding is expected to result in fewer patients served, higher risk of burnout and reduced access, according to the release. The reduction will significantly impact the clinical team, as it will lose the equivalent of 100 hours of support each week, according to Misha Harris, PsyD, director of service and learning programs at Crisis Text Line.
For now, the national suicide prevention training initiative, which trains students, teachers and community members in interventions, remains active but is also experiencing threats to funding.
