Up to $4,962,223 each year for three years will be awarded to one facility in late 2022, the department said. The grant is intended to create a national Center of Excellence for bolstering capacity in nursing facilities to care for residents with behavioral health conditions.

The grant will be funded with CMS civil money penalty funds from fines against noncompliant nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, the department said.

Applications for the grant are open until June 20.

At the Becker's Fall Behavioral Health Summit, taking place November 4–5 in Chicago, behavioral health leaders and executives will explore strategies for expanding access to care, integrating services, addressing workforce challenges and leveraging innovation to improve outcomes across the behavioral health continuum.
