The program received $30 million from the tax on millionaires to fund mental health programs, but the grants expired in June. The program failed to spend an estimated $15 million before the expiration date, which will now be returned to the state.
The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health had the option to use its own funds to preserve the program, but department officials decided against it, claiming they were “underwhelmed by the teams’ performance,” according to the report.
