6 behavioral health investments in July

Six noteworthy behavioral health investments announced since July 6:

  1. Michigan legislators announced a $233.1 million investment for mental health infrastructure July 7. The funds include a $50 million allocation to the Pine Rest Christian Mental Health pediatric behavioral health facility in Grand Rapids.
  2. Michigan announced its 2023 fiscal year budget, including: 
    1. More than $500 million for mental health programs
    2. $277.8 million to expand access to public and private behavioral health services
    3. $57.8 million to add beds at Hawthorn Center, a mental health center for children, Medicaid health homes, and to support costs for new contracts for inpatient care
    4. $220 million to expand inpatient and community-based behavioral health services
    5. $10 million in student loan reimbursement for behavioral health providers
    6. $325 million to build a psychiatric hospital in Detroit.
  3. On July 7, Huntington Beach, Calif. announced $1.5 million in state funding for its mobile mental health crisis response program Be Well OC.
  4. Miami-Dade County, Fla. received a $2.5 million grant July 7 from the Children’s Trust to expand mental health services access for underserved local families.
  5. Pennsylvania approved $100 million funding for in-school mental health support July 13.

School districts will receive $100,000, and charter schools will receive $70,000.

A local program for school safety and security will receive $100 million, and $42.6 million will go to in-home and community mental health services.

  1. New Mexico announced its $1 million mental health and behavioral health grant initiative, giving $50,000 grants to 20 programs at 14 college and university campuses to add and expand services, train staff and fund outreach campaigns.
